  • How to train your dragon 2: Review

How to train your dragon 2: Review – Dream Works Animation returns to the world of dragons and Vikings in this sequel to their successful 2010 outing How to Train Your Dragon. The original film followed the exploits of a Viking chief’s son, who must capture a dragon in order to mark his passage into manhood and prove his worthiness to the tribe.

Firstly would like to thank Nuffnang for providing me a few days earlier screening for this long awaited sequel of How to train your dragon 4 years ago. Manage to get toothless mask and not too shabby cupcakes!

Over hyped, and much anticipation to my liking on the first predecessor , Dream Works did not disappoint in any aspect of the story line, CGI, music score and humorous fun times. The story takes place 5 years later where both viking and dragons leave in peace and harmony… well until Hiccups stumbled across some Dragon trappers which a while master plan of capturing dragons and build an army out of them to rule over humanity.

Returning cast from the first movie was never missed, stars the voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller and Kristen Wiig with the addition of Kit Harington, Cate Blanchett and Djimon Hounsou.

Well sadly for my humble opinion, the progress of the story line died down quite subtlety after a happy bonding family time that went totally wrong. This was quite the first time Dream Works manage to do something unspeakable like in the first movie where Hiccups lost his leg. However the irony of a full total recovery within a few mins didn’t not made a full impact of the shocking moment. I wished the director could add a more touching feeling towards the sadden incident. Actually two scene which supposed to made an total shocker for the viewers didn’t quite convey to me which actual sad emotional connection.

Aside from the two major flaw of the movie, overall it was a pretty enjoyable ride where you feel immerse on riding a dragon. Touching times where son meets mom; mom meets dad, and also not to forget the humorous part where Ruffnut helplessly falls for a hunk due to her teenage female hormones.

With a good propaganda motives on bestowing peace to mankind and not making a tool out of peaceful things, I must say its a pretty well put moral story values. However trying to fit myself in kids age roughly around ages of  7-12 I’m sure they might get lost in the plot lines and dramas going around in some chatty scenes. I feel that Dream Works, kinda made this movie cater towards age gap of teenagers on wards instead a direction which is not swaying to Disney’s cartoons.. well its PG rating anyway.

Dream Works musical score will always impress me with epic battle sound to the beautiful enchanted scenic sound with the flight of Hiccups and Toothless. Oh yea there will be another sequel in 2016, and all in all it’s a very darn good Dream Work animation yet it doesn’t quite have the same run for its money as its predecessor. Overall 7.5/10

  • Maleficent

Maleficent explores the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the classic “Sleeping Beauty” and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone.

Manage to catch it after my jogging session today with my new toy (will review it later) . So here we are Maleficent, a fairytale story retold. I was in for a surprise on how well did Angelina Jolie portrayed Maleficent.

Story narrates by some lady which is quite important at the end for viewers to clearly understand why it is being retold. Firstly yes its Disney’s Sleeping beauty movie  retold. Secondly, they can do what the hell they want with their fairytale franchise. I’m sure some viewers might “boo” and “hoo” on this new spin off for the fairytale of sleeping beauty.

Not many children today even know sleeping beauty, even those that know the story was from the 60″ and we kinda outgrew they childhood Disney stories which I found it very suitable for an older age group of viewers to accept this retold story.

I did watch the classic Sleeping beauty and actually kinda like how Disney is directing this particular retelling of it’s classic. It pretty much shows the softer side of maleficent well not quite soft but its like a crab metaphor, hard on the outside soft and mushy in the inside. Disney brilliantly portrayed the greed of mankind and their down spiral fall.

Sadly enough the Frozen trend did caught into this storyline as well, so without any spoilers… just go and watch it and be prepare for the unthinkable (girl power!).

Maleficent really makes you drawn into her personality like just being wicked enough by just giving a straight face on the camera but yet so enchanting and posh. You will actually felt more sympathy leaning towards maleficent throughout the show. Angelina Jolie is simply just too amazing to be looked at.. gosh 😀 that devilish look…. oh boy, her smirks and facial expression is just guilty-pleasure man..

The amazing fantasy scenic view of flora and fauna really captivated me where put me into a feeling of wanting to be in that land. Its like James Cameron’s Avatar all over again…No musical singing, probably its live action, it would not be pretty appropriate due to its dark settings on most of the movie pacing.

Build up of the plots is pretty good with the finale of an action sequence of fire breathing dragon and a duel between maleficent with the king. I can say it was an a proper development of the whole story put together even tho its actually a different point of view of how Maleficent reactions Overall a very nicely live adaptation done by Disney and a good movie to be watched with good moral values to be taught to children (7.5/10)

  • Edge of Tomorrow

The epic action of “Edge of Tomorrow” unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world.

Just done getting the vibe from the movie, I must say a very well made movie except for the near ending where lazy script writing was at play.  Not to forget the similarity of the upcoming Call of Duty : Advance Warfare with all of that EXO-SUITS. Bloody hell Tom Cruise still looks young and respect to him to do all his stunts… kudos..

The story kicks off with Tom Cruise acting as Major Cage, a kinda PR for the military to seek fresh blood to join. However with turn of events, he was forced to be enrolled into the “Operation Drop fall” which is so called the final battle against the aliens however it was actually a suicide mission.  Best part was, Cage wasn’t even battle train and throughout the battle he was trying to disengage safety lock of his weapon…  haha that was hilarious ! Turn of events made Mr. Cruise able to time-loop the day prior to the final battle. Talk about respawning in a game seesh…

In the 30 mins into the movie, Major Cage met Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt)  and it wasn’t a smooth met up. I’ve chuckle when Rita used Cruise’s extra battery when he saved her. During the course of his time-loop , a lot of fun scene of him getting trial and errors. The story really build up to both of the actors pretty well.

After an hour or so, I’ve pretty much feel so much attached to the main protagonist since he left with only one life after endless of respawning . But in the end I felt the script writer kinda much rushed the ending where it turned out to be a Happy ending. I would prefer to be likewise and more reasonable of both to be fallen heroes or pertaining the effects and made the old suspense of repeating the whole cycle over again.

Story has very strong character build up, and the pacing of the movie was pretty good, you get both drama & action here and there which a dash of dark humours at times.. Graphics was believable and sound effects as well as the aliens was good props.

Overall its a pretty decent sci-fi movie, I’ve yet to read through the manga version and might mis-judge this movie instead, however overall its pretty decent and worth your time to catch it! 8/10

  • X-Men: Days of Future Past After Credit Scene

if you’re already watched X-Men: Days Of Future Past, but you miss After Credit Scene, I shall present you the after credit scene. but right after my quick review on the movie.

The movie starts 50 years in the future, where X-men and the brotherhood join forces into fighting the last final battle against sentinels. Being said that, they send back Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) back into his old body but with present memories and consciousness. Sending him back trying to alter the fate of mutants of a history gone sour. Very welcoming opening act where you get to see old x-men actors as well as the new ones…

The first few minutes was close enough to be an epic futile battle of mutants vs sentinels but they could do more with more mutants dishing out with the sentinels however it was quite satisfied overall, where you get to see (Kitty Pryde)Ellen Page, & (Blink) Fan Bing Bing screen time… yay!  (don’t worry get to see them more at the near end too).  Honourable mentions is Storm! (Halle Berry)

The direction of the movie seems like a slaps of putty to cover up most of the potholes which leaves viewers a bit puzzle on the previous sequels and prequel. I must say it pretty nicely done if you are a keen follower of the movie franchise which kinda resolves on how they gonna tie up loose ends all X-men movies all together.

Most people may think that it’s gonna be like another wolverine movie based on the trailers, but seriously it is totally not, considering a well made up plot line which ties to the comic series, the movie manage to usher Wolverine as a supporting role beside Magneto & Professor X. The movie focuses on the dilemma they are having since X-men First Class left off which I must say a brilliant story telling to correct the X-men movie universe in all angles.

also a lighter side of introduction of Quiksilver trying to bail out his soon to be revealed daddy, with a little hint of him mentioning his dad was also able to control metal. *hint hint*  Kinda like how they add little details to this movie which ties up most of the loose ends of x-men movie universe. A younger version of  stryker too! 😀

in the end, I guess the director tried pretty hard to sum up that they felt sorry of kinda messing up X1, X2, X3 (mostly X3) and tries to correct it with this time paradox thingy (alternate universe of x-men) which I see far logical by any means.

A very well made up movie of the franchise which made stay on the edge of your seats to the very end of the movie. Overall I highly enjoyed the movie which kinda did justice in fixing up X-Men movie universe .. 8.5/10 Would gave 9 if the older x-men version would have longer epic battle scene.

    and finally…….

X-Men: Days of Future Past After Credit Scene leads yet to another movie X-Men: Apocalypse. Which is an upcoming film and the eighth film in the X-Men film franchise. on May 2016

Not much detail has been shared yet, however it seems that the x-men franchise of previous and latest collided to made a proper reboot of the entire franchise. Hope this is done right.

  • Godzilla 2014

Godzilla is a 2014 American science fiction monster film featuring the Japanese film monster of the same name in a reboot of the Godzilla film franchise which was screened on 15 May 2014 in Malaysia.

Manage to catch it with my colleague yesterday, and with such hype on this promising reboot. We hope that Hollywood brings justice on remaking a proper Godzilla movie which was terribly tarnished from  1998 Godzilla movie which also nominated for Worst Picture, Worst Director, and Worst Screenplay in the 19th Golden Raspberry Awards.

Starting off with a happy family of Joe Brody played by Bryan Cranston, with son Ford Brody (Aaron Taylor) tried to surprise his dad with a self-made Happy birthday signage. Little that they know that day would turn out to be their demise… Oh boy what a way to celebrate the dad’s birthday.

Like right in the 30 minutes mark, the director felt liked killing off a main character off the plot and oh boy it was quite a shocking experience for me to see that person die. I wanted to see that character through out the storyline but alas…. one can only dream..

Special effects is close like Pacific Rim with quality disaster effects through out the destruction scene was flawless peppering it up with the sound effects and music score to add realism.

Sadly the movie came short, with lack of story depth which I found it totally unnecessary for the plot line for the Godzilla movie, I meant HEY less human screen times and more Godzilla screen times lah! I thinks at most we could see Godzilla like 5 times in between shots for a total duration of like 15-20 minutes?!?!?!come on, its Godzilla movie man…. give that dude more screen time.

Further to add the list of rants was the obese version of Godzilla, probably being a couch potato far too long since 1954. And the most puzzling part of the movie was the MUTO (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism) tendency to munch on every radioactive things but I always wonder and cringe when someone removes their radioactive mask / not wearing any while being at close proximity of the exposed area of radioactivity.

I also shake head they they tried to move they nuclear nukes via a chin hook over the city of San Francisco with a mere strap on.. geez where is the safety procedures its a nuke for crying out loud!

Story was pretty stale with weird character development, where they tried hard to add family value into it as well of humanity brief mistake on trying to clean up their mess on deactivating an analogue nuke. Oh well at least we get a glimpse on Scarlet witch and Quicksilver for the next avengers…

Overall move is 6.5/10 , it was good , just not good enough due to the lack of screen time given to the King of Monster but I liked how they fan serviced some small parts of the movie related back to the original 1954 Godzilla plus was cool, able to see Godzilla decking out with MUTO.

  • Appleseed Alpha Trailer

Considering a prequel / reboot for Appleseed franchise  is a welcoming addition which will be available on an Digital release on July 15 2014, while Blu-ray and DVD on July 22 2014.

Just recently, IGN has released a trailer for Appleseed Alpha Movie. It is a CGI animated action pack with totally seriousness just like from the creator Shirow Masamune for GITS (Ghost in the Shell).

The movie will be a so called reboot / prequel for the ever existing world of Appleseed where sets in the post-war setting the early days of female soldier Deunan and her cyborg partner, Briareos, as they embark on a whirlwind journey in search of the legendary city of Olympus.

With Aramaki Shinji directing it, who also directed Appleseed and Appleseed: Ex Machina we can say that this next movie will be at safe hands. Not to forget he did redeemed Starship Troopers with the fourth sequel in CGI.

As shown in the trailer the song would be futuristic WUBWUBWUB / tech /electro rock featuring international artist like Yasutaka Nakata (Capsule), Skrillex & Alvin Risk, Androp, DJ Fumiya (Rip Slyme), Passepied, Q;indivi+, tofubeats, AKLO, 80KIDZ, Nishi-ken, and Ram Rider. (kinda put off with dubstep tho)

Sony is at it again which will be release it on Blu-ray and DVD. But I am pretty sure another moo-lah making franchise for the big boys.

    Starship Troopers: Invasion

  • Michael Bay's TMNT movie

My child hood will been ruined on August 8, 2014

After watching the trailer, I was left so confused with my childhood interest in my fav. radical, cowabunga, dudes that loves pizza and skateboarding in the sewers of NYC. So many questions to this upcoming reboot by Nickelodeon and further more 2 more sequel will be milked out. Even before releasing, I feel a good ranting on the trailer itself.

Firstly, dat nose – 🙁 even all the toy lines have proper beak, not a freaking shrek nose !!!

Secondly, shredder is no longer Asian – the real Shredder’s physical appearance remains fairly consistent in all incarnations of the character. Saki is a muscular Japanese man, most frequently seen in the “Shredder” persona, wearing a suit of armour vaguely based on that of a samurai, sometimes with a cape.

Thirdly, April O’ Neil turned long hair portrayed by Megan Fox – Did she missed her acting for TF 2, 3 , & 4 ?

Fourthly Leonardo voice by Johnny Knoxville – Jackass guy trying to be leader serious ? wha??!?!

Fifthly Donatello is wearing glasses which is made out from turtle shell :O its like wearing a shirt made out of human skin O_O what a mockery for all tortoise in the world!

    lastly DAT FRICKING NOSE!!!

  • Warcraft Movie Shooting done on May 23 2014

For those counting down with me, we’re done shooting Warcraft in 3 weeks as of tomorrow! Holy shnikey…” –  Duncan Jones

Got this off from the director official tweet on the movie progression which is based on the popular RTS game which branched out into other gaming franchise. With partnership with Universal Pictures, Legendary Pictures is holstering up the production of this movie. (I bet we are at save hands).

Not much teaser has been released yet other than some info from BlizzCon 2013 panel, but hopefully will be reveal soon enough for this upcoming Blizzcon 2014 on the 7-8th November at Anaheim, California

With a confirmed casting official cast of the feature film based on Blizzard Entertainment’s Warcraft franchise includes  Ben Foster (The Messenger, 3:10 To Yuma, X-Men: The Last Stand), Travis Fimmel (Vikings), Paula Patton (2 Guns, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol), Toby Kebbell (Wrath of the Titans, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) and Rob Kazinsky (True Blood, Pacific Rim, Red Tails), the movie will be heavily be a prime  focus on the orc-versus-human war just like in the first RTS game.

Originally scheduled to be released Dec. 18, 2015, Warcraft is now set to hit theaters March 11, 2016

  • Amazing Spider-man 2 movie review: Tingling hyped subpar

Manage to grab a seat on a premier opening of the movie. The Amazing Spider-man 2: Rise of electro.

On the first impression of the opening screen, I thought it was gonna be one up with the rest of the superheroes movie for this year. Hey, its Sony + Marvel what can go wrong? I tried so hard to gave this 2nd part another chance since the 1st Amazing spider-man did shy away from my likings in sense of character build up.

Movie starts with a brief backtrack in historical time on Peter Parker’s parents and the reason on why Aunt May was working her bums off to put Peter Parker in school.

Moving forward towards the first opening action scene of a regular OSCORP heist where god no reason why did the baddies are trying to steal some kinda plutonium. This particular scene was actually trying to set in line to introduction a much later “soon to be villains”.

Middle part of the movie, it gets draggy where the director tries to tie up all the connectivity of how Peter Parker’s decision making which might turn our quite the opposite. Oh, and not to forget a little dash of a happy love story between Gwen which seems too surreal for my mind to digest.  Can if repeat myself again ? mid-part section has quite a lot plot building hence the feeling of drag which does not compel me well. Spider-man with suit is brilliantly executed, however stripping it down to Peter Parker is just a re-bounce back to reality of the movie.

They tried to make us feel connected between each characters however, the only good touch base was with Harry Osborne, a 20 year old Billionaire. Didn’t really liked the smirk on Peter’s face throughout the movie.

And close to the finale , the action pack scenes did not seize to stop till the end where at the tipping point of Mr. Spidey incident. From my perspective, it was pretty short lived just like in part .1 where the battle scene would go like 15 mins or so before it ends in a tragic lost (referring to part.1 )

All in all, the show was trying to cramp up all the fan-service it could and make path for the upcoming instalments for Spidey 3,4,5,6???  which made the movie a bit too rushed at the ending,  but who knows how this franchise will be milked dry like any other SONY movie counterparts (Resident Evil). Not forgetting subliminal ads on BLU-RAYs and SONY gadgets. Makes me wanna just rush out and buy a SONY gadget now.

Conclusion , all the hype on this movie died the moment I stepped out from the cinema. Quite a disappointment for me to see such a potential REBOOT go to waste. But lets not stab in deeper, it is still a good movie to enjoy, with a little WUBWUB (dubstep) score and fancy light works and comical gestures thrown out by Spidey himself  just keeping the movie intact. 6.5/10

  • Brick Mansion Movie Review

Brick Mansion Movie Reviewed and also a tribute to the late Paul walker.

As for a tribute to the late Paul Walker, I had to catch this show during the weekends. Of course not to forget RZA is in it as well. ahem (WU-TANG CLAN)

The show quickly opens up in the near future 2018 where Detroit has been being cut off from the daily social living of the outside world due to its notorious gang activities where cops had to build a thick wall over the parameters instead of enforcing the streets.

In the later opening scene, Lino (David Belle) was trying to outrun a gang with his parkour skills. At this point , my impression on the show was like , “this is gonna be an awesome show!”. However to my dismay, it was shortly lived, and that’s where the movie went on a declining spiral of B-Movie flick.

Damien, portrayed by Paul Walker gets an assignment into infiltrating Brick Mansion to neutralize some threat which also gives him an edge to hunt the gang leader Tremaine (RZA),  which had some unfinished business.

Plot wise, director tried to made a plot twist but they gave it away in the early beginning of the movie where the Mayor wanted some land in order to rebuild a better Detroit, DUH!. I still did laugh at some of the action-comedic scenes between David Bell & the late Paul Walker. Not to forget the best music which Damien played at his apartment! 😀

I think so its quite a staple get up for Paul Walker majority of his movies to wear a T-shirt and a jeans. Most of the action scene does have its little sheer moment of excitement but quickly way out with its corniness.

Overall it was a good movie but sadly to say, David Belle played a better part in the movie comparing to the main actor, as most attention does goes to Lino even though the screen time for him is lesser comparing to the character Damien. Maybe due to the dynamics of David’s character, which grew on me through out the movie. With the weird ending plot twist where all hold hands and sang “kumbaya” (almost sang, I swear!) I guess this movie is watchable as a 2nd last tribute to the late Paul Walker. ( we will still see him in F&F7)  6/10

In memories of Paul Walker 1973 – 2013
